As One Geek Store Closes, Another Opens In Downtown Mesa [Toys]

Wilkowski_Chueh

It’s been a bummer hearing about the closing fates of Atomic, Cade, and Evermore Nevermore, so it’s nice to have some “opening” news today.

Lulubell has had a designer toy shop down in Tucson for a while, but she’s expanding to Downtown Mesa this month! The off-beat vibes growing there must have beckoned her.

To celebrate, they’re hosting a show during Main Street’s 2nd Friday (December 9th) from 6pm to 9pm.

Check it out for some vinyl, and resin, and statues, and toys, and craziness.

6 Things For Geeks To Do This Weekend In Arizona [WE 06/25]

This weekend, Geek Arizona gets to know Star Wars, Dunnys, comics, wizards, and violent video games a little better.

And we’re not complaining. I love when I get to write about geeky weekends in Arizona with lots of variety, and this weekend is no exception.

I hope you find something interesting to get out and do/try/checkout this weekend:

Thursday, June 23rd

Star Wars Story/Craft Time [Phoenix]

  • “Once upon a time, in a galaxy far, far away…”
  • I’m guessing that’s how Star Wars Story Time might start, anyway.
  • Local Star Wars costumers are showing up around 1pm at Bookmans Phoenix to help.
  • Bring the kids and your imaaaaagination!

Dunny Release Party [Phoenix]

  • Some geeks love toys.
  • Sometimes, those same geeks like Dunnys.
  • Geeks who love Dunnys should love Red Hot Robot.
  • The three will combine at 6pm.
  • Details on Facebook.

Friday, June 24th

Stingray Sam [Phoenix]

  • An indie-sci-fi-western-spaceship-musical-series?-film?-thing? No idea.
  • Looks absolutely bizarre, but actually got decent reviews.
  • (I admit I’m kind of interested in seeing this.)
  • Starts Friday night but plays all weekend at The Filmbar Phoenix
  • Get all the details and showtimes at their site.

Saturday, June 25th

Comics Party [Glendale]

  • Jesse James is gathering up some of The AZ’s local comic talent for another party.
  • Starts at 10am at his shop and goes all day.
  • Then stick around for the Hawaiian themed “after party.”
  • Get your details on Bookface.

Harry Potter Movie Marathon [Chandler]

  • Get together with fellow wizards and burn through the movies all day.
  • Starts at 10am and goes until 10pm. Show up whenever.
  • Raffles, trivia contests, snacks, a magic show, and more.
  • Tickets for the whole day are $20. (It’s a fundraising event.)
  • Going down at this place in Chandler.
  • Learn more at the Harry Potter Movie Marathon website.

Mortal Kombat Tournament [Mesa]

  • Free to enter, but boasts some decent giftcards as prizes.
  • At Gotham City Comics at 2pm. Bring your own paddles.
  • Learn more on The Pause Button blog – including a few other tournaments going on.

Anything else? Let me know!

And if you’re new here, I’m on The Twitter and The Facebook if you’d like to keep up with Arizona’s geek culture.

A Couple Things To Do This Weekend In Geek Arizona [WE 06/05]

This weekend, Geek Arizona LANs it up for charity and builds a galaxy far far away (with Legos).

Not too many things this weekend, that I know of, and I already wrote about one of them.

Perhaps we deserve a bit of a rest between nerding out at Phoenix Comicon last weekend and nerding out at Lightning Octocon next weekend.

Friday, June 3rd

DESERTBASH X [Phoenix]

*Tour The New HeatSync Labs [Mesa]

  • I just read that if you’re interested in checking out their new Mesa location, they’re giving a tour Friday night.
  • Just show up at 7pm at their new place on Main St in Mesa.
  • Could be a good chance to learn more if you’re curious about the local hacker community.
  • Learn more on their blog.

*More Pop Art at Cade Gallery [Phoenix]

Saturday, June 4th

Star Wars Lego Building Competition [Phoenix]

  • Legoland is coming to Phoenix for the weekend, and they’re bringing Star Wars with them.
  • Go check out a “Junior Building Competition” on the 4th & 5th.
  • At the Arizona Science Center in Phoenix from 10am to 5pm.
  • Or just check out all the Star Wars Lego stuff they’ll have.
  • Learn a little more at the AZ Science Center’s site.

There you have it! Chime in if you know of anything else.

Whatever you do this weekend, remember to have fun and to use lightsabers if at all possible.
