4 Geek Things To Do This Weekend In Arizona [WE 03/04]

This Weekend, Arizona games, photographs cosplayers, listens to Science Fiction authors, and helps you write Science Fiction yourself.

A bit light this weekend, but still some interesting things.

Thursday, March 1st

Board Game Night [Tucson]
  • I recently learned that Bookmans Ina in Tucson does this every week.
  • As a big fan of board games, I wish I could make the trip just to play.
  • Borrow a game, join a game, or bring whatever you want from home.
  • Starts at 6pm and goes until close.

Saturday, March 3rd

Alter Ego Photoshoot [Chandler]
  • If you do the cosplay thing, some pros are offering a fancy photoshoot.
  • Let them know if you’re interested over on Facebook.
  • From 9am to Noon somwhere in the Chandler area.
  • (RSVP for details.)
Neil Stephenson at Emerge!  [Tempe]
Science Fiction Writer’s Workshop [Mesa]
  • Nothing like a group of like minded geeks to boost your writing.
  • SciFi writers at any level are invited to bring their work and help each other out.
  • Get and give feedback, and swap big ideas.
  • Starts at 10am at LoFi Coffee in Mesa.

As always, please let me know if I’ve missed anything so we can share.

Have a fun weekend!

Neal Stephenson To Speak At ASU Next Weekend

Neal Stephenson

Hey everyone, just a quick heads up:

Reader Layal tipped me off that author Neal Stephenson will be speaking next weekend at ASU.

I first read Snow Crash a few years ago. It’s a superbly fun book that (arguably) helped pave the way for ideas like Wikipedia, Second Life, and Google Earth.

Plus its main character is named Hiro Protagonist…

Catch Neal and other forward-thinking folks at ASU’s Emerge 2012 March 3rd.

9:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m., Neeb Hall, ASU Tempe Campus.

Meet The Star of The Upcoming Hunger Games Film In Scottsdale!

Katniss

Like most of you, I have read and thoroughly enjoyed The Hunger Games.

And like some of you, I am cautiously optimistic about the upcoming movie adaptation. If the producers can sit on their hands and let the story from the book do its thing (and if Woody can hold back a little), I think it could work and kid-on-kid violence will be enjoyed by all.

Anyway, what was I talking about?

Oh yes, if you fancy yourself a true fan and would like to meet Jennifer Lawrence (Katniss) in a couple weeks, here’s your chance!

Jennifer will be at The Microsoft Store in Scottsdale on March 7th at 9am.

The first 100 people there will get VIP wristbands for the event.

In other words, show up early

Or, if you’d like to go even further, there’s another way you can score VIP access to this thing. If you show up at the store between now and Feb 29th, you can sign up to win a VIP wristband, as well as a limited edition “Hunger Games” PC.

Sounds like a grand time! If you sign up, may the odds be ever in your favor.
