This weekend, Phoenix watches a ton of classic 80’s Sci Fi movies, has some heavy discussion around Superman, rocks out with Harry Potter, and premiere’s Joss Whedon’s latest film.
There’s something in the air this weekend. Smells like… awesomeness.

80’s Cult Favorites: Repo Man [Phoenix]
The FilmBar has been burning through an amazing list of 80’s classics lately, with this week showcasing Repo Man. Watch as the Mighty Ducks guy gets more than he bargained for reclaiming a “mysterious – and otherworldy – Chevy Malibu.” Be in your seat by 7:45pm.
Nerd Night Phoenix 15 – Super Secrets Exposed! [Phoenix]
Once again, nerds take over Carly’s Bistro to dive way deeper into awesome topics than anyone normally should. Such is the nerd way. This time around, enjoy presentations like Man of Steel: Kryptonian or American?? and STYX or STY(n)X: The Truth Comes Out! Choose your Thursday night event wisely as this one starts at 8pm.
Friday, June 21st
Joss Whedon’s Much Ado About Nothing Premiere Party [Scottsdale]
So, the guy behind Buffy, Dr Horrible, and Firefly (and a few more projects you may have heard of) directed a Shakespear movie and critics are loving it. Lucky for us, it’s coming to Arizona and you can check out the premiere at Harkin’s Camelview, starting at 6:30pm. Tickets aren’t cheap, but if you love Joss’ style, you should check it out.
Saturday, June 22nd
Charity Car Wash & Art Auction For The Gregory Family [Glendale]
You may have heard the awful news about local comic book writer Raven Gregory’s ex-wife, and the amazing local comic community here pulling together to help out as much as they can. Swing by Jesse James Comics between 8am and 5pm for a car wash and art auction to help cover funeral costs, etc.
Game Like A Pirate Night [Glendale]
There’s regular gaming, and then there’s gaming like a pirate – which is, of course, superior. The DREAD Fleet is invading Imperial Outpost Games for a night of Pirate Flux, Liar’s Dice, and more. I have a feeling people may be dressed like a pirate for this, so don’t be shy with that eye patch, mate.
Harry & The Potters [Phoenix]
Imagine, if you will, a band that dresses up like like boy wizards, sings songs about about Diagon Alley, life at Hogwarts, and suffocating summers trapped with the Dursleys. Well my friend, imagine no more. Harry & The Potters are in town this weekend, doing a free kids friendly show at The Burton Barr Central Library at 6pm and a $5 show later at The Trunk Space with a few other bands. Merlin’s beard!
Cult Classics: The Princess Bride [Tempe]
Oh, so many (many, many) great quotes in this movie. Just about every scene is a classic in itself. Don’t miss out on this more-than-just-a-movie event – get tickets and show up at Pollock Tempe Cinemas before 9:30pm. Fezzik told me he wants you to go, and he means it.
Sunday, June 23rd
Finish off your weekend with one last 80’s classic. Fight for The Users once again and disc-slap that MCP right in his weird spinning face. Part of The Art of Video Games going on at the Phoenix Art Museum. Starts at 1pm.
*Just Added: Star Wars Day With The Diamondbacks [Phoenix]
Thanks to Daniel for sharing this event in the comments! Game starts at 1pm.
So, any of you going to any of these? Did I miss anything? Drop a comment and share!
