As you may have heard by now, local comic book chain Atomic Comics quietly closed its doors last night, for good.

No “final” sales, no big announcements.

The reactions I’ve found around my little social web (and beyond) have been a wide mixture between confusion, a few “not surprised” responses, and most of the five stages of grief.

Personally, Atomic Comics was the first comic store I’d stepped inside since I was a teenager, and it was the first place I ever photographed an event at for Lightning Octopus. I took my 2 year old to Atomic Comics for Free Comic Book Day this year, and I also shot a Godzilla comic signing party there.

I must confess it feels weird to hear it is just gone.

Here are some reactions from other local bloggers:

I’ve reluctantly updated The Map of Local Nerdery

I hope you’ll check it out, see what’s around you, and take a few minutes this week to swing inside a local geek haven. Chat up someone behind the counter about what’s interesting, and drop a few bucks if you find something you might like.
