Each week Thomas Healy contributes his comics and geek culture article The Word. Enjoy!
This week’s column is titled: The stereotypical, sexist nature in which nerds treat women, or, how Erik Larsen is a complete twat!
Over the last few days there has been some talk in the #nerd corners of both the blogosphere and Twitterverse over the completion of the lawsuit between Todd McFarlane and Neil Gaiman. The dispute arose over supposed royalties owed to Gaiman by Image and Todd about characters that he had created for the Image Comics title Spawn. Those characters are Medieval Spawn, Cagliostro, and Angela.
Now this is all well and good. This is in no way a look into the legal system of the United States of America. I was not at the proceedings so I will not even attempt to validate the courts findings. What I do want to talk about is the actions of Image founder and former editor-in-chief Erik Larsen. I can understand that he would be upset. He is a founding member and partial owner of Image comics. Hell, he used to be the main man, the big boss, the motha’ fuckin’ EIC, prior to the (arguably more successful) reign of writer Robert Kirkman. But as one commenter on the Comic Book Resources board stated – “No one does a better job at making themselves look bad than Erik Larsen.”
You see, he had to open his mouth and start talking about the decision, and that’s when it all went horribly, horribly wrong.
Erik was upset. So he did what any self-respecting man in his position would do… He started bitching on the internet. That’s when he said the following on the Image message board- “it seems patently unfair that Neil could claim ownership of “Spawn on a horse” much less that an all woman jury, charmed by his English accent and sad story would award him that.”
Wait a minute… Did he just say that because the jury was full of women and Neil is British, that’s why Neil won?!?
Hi Erik, my name’s Thomas Healy. I work in a comic shop. I write a weekly column called The Word. I do a podcast called I Have Issues TV. It would be really cool if you checked that out some time. I just have one question… ARE YOU ON FUCKING CRACK?
I don’t care if you agree with the decision or not. Claiming that because women were on the jury, they were influenced by Neil Gaiman’s sexy-magic, James Bond-esque accent is fucking ridiculous! Fuck you Erik! Even if the judgment is bogus, even if Todd was right this whole time, you have made a fool of yourself and helped make the comics industry and it’s fans, that much more like the stereotypes that we have been fighting against for the past 72 years!
Don’t blame women for yours, Todd’s, or Image Comics’ failings. Blame your lawyer if you think this was unfair. He did a shit job. Don’t hop on Twitter trying to start a fight with people in the hopes of winning over fans to your side of the argument. You come off like a desperate fool.
So the moral of that story is that Erik Larsen is a twat, and Savage Dragon hasn’t been good in 15 years. Now I know this may not be the popular opinion. That’s fine. Many of you may love Spawn and Savage Dragon. That’s fine also. If you disagree with me let me know.
